Over the past couple of months I have seen an interesting trend when viewing the statistics of this site. At least once a week, someone is redirected to this site from Google after having done a search for "meaning of running with scissors" or something very similar. Due to this phenomena, I wanted to be a good internet citizen and provide you with the definition you are searching for.
I was tempted to offer said definition at the end of this blog post and make you read through some things I really want to say to you, but I'm not going to do that. I will simply ask that you take a minute or two to check out some of the other posts on my blog, and maybe even leave a comment or two.
I also wanted you to know that I have prayed specifically for those of you who found your way here in this manner.
Without further ado, here is my definition.
Running with Scissors:
1. A common American colloquialism which means to live life in such a way that you coherently recognize the inherent dangers of your actions, yet you participate/perform said actions nonetheless. (see "You'll poke your eye out")
2. A recent book which passes itself off as literature but which really depicts the troubled young life of it's author by using descriptions of pedophelia and homosexuality so graphic that I can not think of this book without physical revulsion. Hollywood has of course embraced it and made an "award winning" movie.

Google has directed me to your blog while looking for the meaning of 'running with scissors'. Then it was funny to read how u had anticipated me/us to end up here. Thaks for filling me in about the meaning!
A Hungarian girl, who happens to be an English teacher
Not sure the movie is considered award winning. But people think the book is funny. Sorry it was offensive to you.
Thanks for your definition.

Yet another person came here for the definition! This time, thank you from Poland ;)
Thank you!
Ha! Serendipity! Also routed here via Google. Thanks for the meaning & greetings from sunny South Africa.
you're a complete imbecile for saying that running with scissors barely passes as literature. it's an amazingly good book and just because you're simple-minded and don't enjoy it you shouldn't be downplaying it if everyone thinks as you do because obviously they don't since it was in the new-yorker bestseller list. thank you.
For the last poster who thinks I'm an imbecile.
1. At least I put my thoughts out here and stand by them. I don't just post anonymously.
2. I've read "Amazingly Good Books", this isn't one of them. Of course, that's just my opinion, but then again, this is my blog.
3. What's your evidence that I am simple minded? Or is that just your opinion?
4. By your logic...I shouldn't be downplaying the book because other people liked it. Well, other people like me, so why are you downplaying me? Tough getting outsmarted by the simpleminded, isn't it? (rhetorical)
5. There are a lot of things I don't agree with in the NY Times.
6. You voted for Obama, didn't you? (That's rhetorical)
(And for the record, I deleted the last post because I had two number 6's. I hate appearing simple minded)
Google got me here too. And this time thanks from Russia.
Thank you so much for your concious blogging =).
I'm no exception. Been redirected here while searching for the definition :)
thanks from argentina
I "reprayed" for you again today.
Poland?? ME too!!! And thanks for the definition. And I'm the ying of the ying yang if the yang is tech-savy, so I'm afraid I couldn't look at the other blogs.
Thank you for the definition and related insights. Always glad to see the people with strong views.
Another Google drop-in! Thank you for your definition, very considerate of you.

Couldn't resist posting a comment! Yup, I googled to (giggle) LOL!
Also come here via google--and really didn't much care for the book either :)
Thanks for putting up the meaning of the phrase.
I like to remain anonymous.
Nobody in here who have mentioned India as yet. So thank you from India.
Well.. I did take time to read the rest of the blog.
Its your blog - the most important are your comments in here.
Thanks for putting in the meaning.
It's been pretty interesting to see globalization in action like this!!
Hey Randy, I'm from Seattle, brought here by Google, just like everyone else. So I did what you said and looked around at the blog and stuff, saw some views I agree with some I disagree with, some that made me want to read right off the liberal progressive script and write you off as just another fundy robot. And trust me I was trying as hard as I could not to like you and your blog, because I am a (are you ready?) Gay, Pagan, Democratic, Obama-voting, tree-hugging, left winger. But the fact is, that your blog is very well written and informative and insightful. And when you said, "I wonder if that's what God thinks about me?" on 4/17/09, I decided you weren't half bad. I sincerely hope that your God and my Goddess can lead all of us to be as level headed and clear sighted as you seem to be. I accept all views of religion and spirituality as valid and don't hate people because of their religion, but because of their actions or lack thereof. Actually disappointment is a better word than hate, since I don't actually "hate" anyone. Lets leave the judgement up to the higher power(s) when the time comes and just try to spend our time together on this earth we all share as amicably as possible. Finally (at last) Yep it's your blog. You can post your opinions and views and beliefs until your eyeballs bleed. That's what a blog is. So keep doing it! I'll be back to read more later. There's a lot here.
Hi Jeff, I sincerely appreciate your comment. I aspire to be as level headed as you describe, but I don't always make the grade. ;).
Curious about the movie & searched for it's meaning. I ended up here. Salamat (Thank You) for sharing. Mabuhay from the Philippines! :)
Wov I came here exactly for the reason you pointed out! Thanks!
great blog!!! don't pay attention to the dummies that get mad just because you say your opinion about that book, it must have been the author who wrote that!!! hahaha!!!
Who else could disagree with you!!!!
I too was directed to your blog while searching for the meaning of "runs with scissors". Thanks for the definition from Slovenia (NOT Slovakia!) ;-)
I searched "don't run with scissors" on Google. I got directed here, and it was funny to read that you had set up this page for people on the same pursuit of knowledge.
great
Thanks!
... just to let you know this post is still doing his work! :) Thanks from Italy!
Thank you from Germany! Great article. I'm always eager to learn something new in English.
Thought I'd leave my foot print in such an interesting post. Thanks from a Chinese .Net developer living in Atlanta.
Thanks for the usefull information! Greetings from MÉXICO!!

Thank you from London, I should really be looking at the phrase dictionary on the shelf beside my desk, but I am far too lazy. Plus, phrase dictionaries are not as interesting as your blog.
I would just like to say Obama is not that bad and if you didn't like that book, you should stay away from anything written by Dan Rhodes, especially Timoleon Vieta Come Home.
Glad to see someone has dedicated some time and thought to an inter-generational family trait of mine. Oh well, it's a lifestyle.
I have to admit that I found the book insightful of a fellow human's horrific upbringing. It made me see that, just when we think we have/had it bad, there are others who have/had it worse. That being said (which wasn't why I was posting... REALLY!!!), you are freakin' hilarious! An imbecile? No!!! Simple- minded? Nope!!! You have your own opinion and are NOT afraid to share it. LOVE THAT!! Mr./Ms. Anonymous above was, apparently, looking in the mirror when posting. Just saying.... Now, back to my reading- Running With Scissors and, now, more of your blogs!!! Thanks
Thank you, from Australia. Your page was the number one hit when I searched "run with scissors meaning". By the way, "Run with Scissors" by Australian band The Shiny Brights is a song I like very much (find it on youtube)
Googled from Uruguay...
I am atheist, could consider myself moderate leftish, and would have voted Obama if I was North American.
Yet I totally understand your feelings about that book. I cannot judge this one, because I haven't read it, but that happened to me with others. I would call it "yellow literature" if it doesn't have a name yet.
Causing a big impression is not art, because anyone can do it with the obvious. Causing a big impression with the subtle and original, that's another thing...
Anyway, don't know about this specific book.
Jeez, it seems like Google's doing a great job at bringing people from all across the globe straight to your blog... All these different views and beliefs, how cool! Now in 2013 and this time from the Czech republic let me also say my thanks for sharing. And nah, don't think I'll be reading that book at all! :)
Thanks from Virginia, USA
